Fishing and Hunting

Glistening steelheads. Mature “benchleg” bucks. Acorn-fattened bruins. Strutting gobblers. Find these and much more under the auburn canvas of oaks along the steep breaks of the Klickitat River canyon.

Fishing Information

  • Fishing Seasons and Regulations

Whether you’re fishing for summer or winter steelhead, resident rainbow trout, spring or fall Chinook salmon, fall coho salmon, or whitefish, you’ll need to be familiar with the fishing regulations on the Klickitat River as they change throughout the year. Check out WDFW’s sportfishing regulations, their Fish Washington mobile app, Emergency Rules that apply to the Klickitat, and Regional fishing hotline (the Klickitat River is in Region 5).

  • Fishing Shuttles

In addition to groceries, deli food, Klickitat souvenirs, fishing tackle, and fishing and hunting licenses, where else would you look for fishing trip shuttles than the Canyon Market? Need to arrange a drop-of and a pick-up from your all-day drift boat fishing trip down the Klickitat? Contact the Canyon Market by phone or schedule a shuttle online to book your next fishing shuttle. Check out Canyon Market’s shuttle page as well for links to Klickitat River water levels and daily fish counts. The Klickitat Community Facebook page is also an excellent source for daily updates and photos of river conditions (https://www.facebook.com/KlickitatCommunity/).

Hunting Information

  • Hunting Seasons and Regulations

The Klickitat River marks the boundary line between Game Management Units 578 and 388, with deer on the west side of the Klickitat (GMU 578) considered black-tailed deer and deer on the east side of the Klickitat (GMU 388) considered mule deer. Obviously, the boundary line means nothing to the deer and they regularly cross, blurring the sub-species demarcation between black-tailed and mule deer. Bear, cougar, elk, and quail are also often found along the Klickitat, with ducks regularly use the Klickitat waterway. Check out WDFW’s hunting seasons and regulations to pursue these fantastic animals!

Where to Go

  • WDFW Lands

Finding a place to hunt or fish can be challenging in this day and age. Luckily, units of WDFW’s Klickitat Wildlife Area can be found up and down the Klickitat River corridor! The Klickitat Wildlife Area spans 27,200 acres and is broken up into multiple units such as the Soda Springs Unit, Dillacort Canyon Unit, and Fisher Hill Unit. WDFW also manages several water access sites along the Klickitat River. This land is public land, but a WDFW vehicle access pass or a Discover Pass are required for access. Check out the link below for more information on the Klickitat Wildlife Area!

  • WDFW Private Lands Access Program

In addition to providing access opportunities on public lands, WDFW also manages a free Private Lands Access Program, where private landowners voluntarily enroll their properties in a program for public hunting access. Access types vary from Feel Free to Hunt properties, to Hunt by Written Permission properties, to Hunt by Reservation properties. Access to these lands is a privilege, not a right, so please be courteous and respectful on these lands!

WDFW’s Private Lands Biologist for Region 5, Monique Ferris, can be reached by email for more information at Monique.Ferris@dfw.wa.gov.

Feel free to visit WDFW’s Private Lands Access Program site (click on the link below) and search by county for additional information regarding Klickitat County private lands hunting opportunities.

  • Klickitat County GIS

Navigating the patchwork of public and private land ownerships in an area can present a challenge to hunters and recreationists. Not everyone has OnX downloaded on their phone. Visit the Klickitat County GIS page for an up-to-date map of parcels and land ownership throughout the county.

Private industrial timberlands in Klickitat County such as Western Pacific Timber (enrolled in WDFW’s Feel Free to Hunt access program), Hancock/Manulife Timber, and DGS/AFM (American Forest Management) can provide excellent hunting opportunities and often offer free public access on some or all of their parcels. Please visit their respective websites for information regarding lands open to hunting, fire closures, and rules and regulations pertaining to the use of these lands. Mapping programs such as OnX and the Klickitat County GIS page (link below) can help you determine where these lands are located throughout the county.
